Initial ideas

We have begun research and brainstorming different narratives for our opening sequence coursework, These are our initial ideas.

Horror Spoof.
One our of ideas was to create a horror spoof, inspired by films such as Scary Movie. However because of the interest of manga and anime from our questionnaire results we decided to incorporate Asian film culture by parodying Hollywood adaptations of Japanese horror films such as The Ring, The Grudge and The Shutter. We considered doing a horror spoof because it is something different and risqué.

The opening scene of the sequence is parodying an iconic moment from the film The Ring whereby the character Samara crawls out of a television. Our version would be a tracking shot over to a television with a tilt down and the same Samara character crawling eerily out of a television, we would include diegetic sounds of the static television and ringing telephone from the original film sequence. We would use parallel editing to switch between the television screen and the actor, creating tension. However we would only ever see the back of the actor during this scene and whilst the possessed Samara character is crawling out of the television, the camera would do a 180 degree rule towards the actor who would suddenly take off his 3d glasses and deliver the line 'Holy cow, that was some high definition sh*t'

Thriller

Our next idea for a narrative is inspired by A Cinderella Story - a fairy tale turned into a modern day situation using the plot of the original Cinderella story. Another inspiration is a Korean horror which is a take on the story of Hansel and Gretel. However instead of using Cinderella or Hansel and Gretel, we are going to use Snow White and turn it in to a thriller. In this remake Snow White's name will be Yuki as it translates as "goddess of snow" in japanese. Yuki's mother had died after she had given birth to her. 15 years later, her father married another woman who has illusions in her nightmares; every night, a voice in her sleep would ask her "Who's the fairest of them all?" and a voice responds "You my dear, are the fairest of them all" until on Yuki's 16th birthday it responds "Yuki is the fairest of them all". Outraged, she becomes hanuted by the spirits voice and plots to get rid of Yuki.

The opening scene would be a montage of Yuki's life from when she was being born to when her father remarried. Alongside the montage is a voice over of the spirit from the step-mothers dreams, foreshadowing an upcoming catastrophe. It then switches to a silent scene of Yuki and her step mother, showing the tension and animosity in their relationship, We would include a zoom in on both characters angry facial expression.
The credits will consist of the group's individual names and it will appear alongside the acting.
In reference to Media theorists such as Levi-Strauss, in this initial idea, we wanted to use the binary opposites Love/Hate between the Step-Mother and Father of Yuki, showing Yuki's father as loving and affectionate towards Yuki, however having the Step-Mother, showing hatred and dislike for Yuki, showing the contrast in the way they treat Yuki. Also in terms of Vladimir Propp's theory, we were going to have good and bad characters in this introduction, having the step mother being the evil woman and the good guy being Yuki's father.

Final idea

Japanese Horror

Our final idea we chose to do for our introduction is a J-Horror non spoof introduction, inspired by films such as The Grudge and The Ring.
The final introduction will firstly start with eery piano/violin music with images of a comic book fading in and out with the credits on them, showing a girl and her family being killed by a murderer, and pictures keep fading in and out showing her death etc. After the credits are shown, the scene will set, an establishing shot showing the character Natsuko in her school library, Natsuko will be played by Zainab, and the scene will show Natsuko searching for a book.

After she reaches up to a shelf a book falls on the floor, Natsuko curiously picks the book up and is intrigued by the authentic look of it, dusty and right from the top shelf she takes a look around to see if anyone is looking at her and puts it with all the other schoolbooks she is holding not to make it obvious. As she walks out of the library alone as she is a solitary character who hardly socializes as most students at her school find her avid reading strange. A tracking shot would show Natsuko searching for somewhere to read and then entering her schools empty thearte.

She steps in and looks around and behind her to see if anyone is in there or approaching her, no-one is around in the theatre, so she walks up the stairs to go find a place to hide away from anyone who comes in and finds a spot where no-one can see her, she takes a look at the front cover to see a scary looking girl with thick black hair covering her face, Natsuko even more intrigued and curious opens it to see japanese writing and a comic showing the life of this girl and pictures of her and her family being murdered. She then sees an image of this girl with a knife put to her face and a cut sliced upon her face, as Natsuko reads on and looks at more, blood drops on the book from Natsuko's face, she touches her cheek in shock to find herself bleeding just like the image of the girl in the comicbook, and as the camera shows a middle shot of her, we see Yuki right behind her standing there bleeding, with Natusko not being aware of Yuki's spiritual haunting presence, the lights in the Theatre suddenly go off, and the scene automatically stops into black, and the title of the movie 'The Foreshadowed' fades in to the scene.

Also in this final idea, in reference to media theorist Levi-Strauss, we used binary oppositions, firstly in the significance of names, Yuki and Natsuko, Yuki meaning snow goddess and Natsuko summer child,  therefore showing contrast in the names in reference to weather and temperature, a hot and cold binary opposition. Also another binary opposition in our final idea is the colour of skin for the two actors Yuki and Natsuko, Yuki having a more pale complexion in her face, dead and cold looking, however Natsuko being more darker and tanned, having a light/dark binary opposition because of this.

We also have another media theory linked in our final idea which is Propp's function of characters, having a good/evil character in our final idea, Yuki being the evil spiritual haunting ghost and Natsuko being the good character, innocent and unaware of the curse of the comic book she had been intrigued into reading once her eyes first laid on the cover of the comic.
