Questionnaire analysis

As a part of our audience research we created a second questionnaire, directly related to the J-Horror genre. This will help us decide the content of our opening sequence and how to appeal to our target audience. We collected data from 20 people including fellow media students and forums associated with J-Horror such as asian-horror-movies.com. We found that most people did watch horror movies and over watch Japanese horror movies. As we were basing our opening sequence on J Horror we needed in depth understanding of the genre. Despite this only half actually read manga comics, and this was obviously most of the people who watched Japanese films. Again we found that most people found Hollywood horror scarier than Japanese films but it was close and we were not too concerned about this. In question 6 most people rated hauntings as one of the main sub genres they looked for in a horror film. Most people who like horror generally look for scary things to happen and mystery to occur. Horror films also allow some people to enter their own world and go on their own adventure. Most people said they were drawn to a film because of its trailer, which highlighted to us the importance of advertising your film efficiently in the real world and getting all the keys scenes included, as well as setting and effects.

Q
7) Why do you like horror movies?
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

- They scare me sometimes but I find some of the narrative so ridiculous that it's funny
 - I enjoy the thrill it gives me while watching it
 - The allow me to enter a world I have not seen or experienced before and allows me to realize how lucky and good my life is not to be in that world.
 - The tension it gives me pleasures me and they make you jump and sometimes is unpredictable
 - I like the twists
 - I like the mystery the narrative has like why a ghost is haunting people

A
Horror films are popular because it projects negative emotions (i.e fear) in an environment the audience can control, thus making it entertaining.

Q
8) How is Japanese horror similar to Hollywood horror?
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

R
 - Hollywood horror is more predictable because they have similar narratives and plots unlike Japanese horror which has different endings in them which is better cause it keeps us wanna keep watching the movie because sometimes the endings are very unexpected
 - Japanese have different plots
 - Some Japanese directors such as Takeshi Miike makes really controversial plots and you don't really get that in hollywood cause there are so much boundaries what they can release and etc.
 - Their conventions are very similar because they're still both horror
 - Japanese horror narratives have really slow build ups to the main plot so I prefer Hollywood horror
 - Japanese horror get you in the story more unlike hollywood horror which you can just forget how you felt while watching he movie. Japanese horror gets me very paranoid like looking out for yurei

A
The cultural differences within Hollywood and Japanese horror are vast, and this affects their popularity. However, our results indicate Japanese horror is more effective with audience interaction and narrative progression.

A
The most popular result was trailers. This result affects the marketing of our movie if it's to be released. We have decided to create a marketing strategy and film posters alongside our opening sequence to see whether it would affect the success of our opening sequence.
