Preliminary Task evaluation

Preliminary Task.

Our task was to create a 30 second sequence showing any scenario; using a variety of shots and our imaginations although sticking to the criteria which is to include;

-Continuity Editing
-180 degree rule
-Shot reverse Shot
-Match-On-Action

However, before we began filming we had to create a simple scenario for our sequence and create a storyboard, to give us a guide and idea of how to film and plan it. The narrative of our sequence was brief, a boy asking a girl to prom. We chose a simple narrative because we wanted to develop the sequence showcasing our camera skills.

We wrote up a short script of suitable lines for the characters and rehearsed, however when it came to recording it we found it easier to improvise and say what came naturally as opposed to sticking to the script. Each person in the group wrote up a storyboard with pictures and included their own ideas in regards to timing of each shot, type of shot used, cuts, music and dialogue in each scene.

Shots/angles used:
- 180 degree rule
- Shot reverse Shot
- Match-On-Action
- 'Over the shoulder'
- Tilt up
- Medium shot
- Zoom in
- Handheld
- Panning
- Point of View

Group Feedback.
When filming we found it surprisingly challenging, as we expected it to be rather more straightforward, the main factor affecting our filming was the fact it was in a busy learning environment and we had to constantly stop filming whilst people were walking through our scene. The actors also found it tiring as many of the scenes were repeated and it became frustrating at times as we tried to perfect our actions/movements and that had to coincide with perfect filming and making sure all the camera shots were filmed to a high standard. The whole process took us about 1 hour and a half and every scene took on average 5 takes. Despite this we did feel the time allocated was suitable and we were able to include and demonstrate our ideas by the end of the session. Our sequence was effective in presenting the key camera skills needed to incorporate into our coursework sequence. However the preliminary is over the specified time limit, this is because of the depth and development within our narrative.
